The Foundation of Self-Discovery: Starting 2026 With Intention

The milestone of starting Season 5 of my podcast has had me thinking about something I've been discussing with friends lately, something that feels especially relevant as we begin a New Year: the importance of taking time to truly learn yourself.

The Gap We Don't See

So many of us move through life on autopilot, following the expectations others have set for us. We stay in our lane, color within the lines, and rarely cause waves. While this approach might keep us out of immediate trouble, it creates something far more concerning: a gap in self-knowledge.

When you spend years walking a road that someone else paved for you, you miss crucial opportunities to discover who you actually are. I experienced this firsthand during my transition from high school to college. I was the quintessential "good kid" who did exactly what was expected, when it was expected, how it was expected.

Then I moved across the country for college, and suddenly that familiar guidance system disappeared.

The College Crucible

College has a way of forcing growth, of pushing people to figure out who they really are when no one's watching. But here's the thing: that process isn't always straightforward, especially if you're an introvert like me.

The desire to fit in can become overwhelming. If you're lucky, you find yourself surrounded by people who share your goals and values. But what happens when that's not the case? You might find yourself molding your personality to match a group that doesn't actually align with your aspirations. And in those early days, you won't even notice because you're just relieved to have found "your people."

The truth often reveals itself later, after graduation, when life pushes everyone in different directions. You might discover that the only thing holding your friend group together was proximity and convenience. Or worse, you might realize that maintaining these relationships is actively preventing you from moving forward in the direction you want to go.

When you reach this crossroads, it's time to take a step back.

Three Questions That Change Everything

If you're struggling to figure out what you actually want for yourself, start by digging deeper with these questions:

What do I enjoy doing in my free time?

Not what you think you should enjoy, or what looks good on social media, but what genuinely brings you joy when no one's expectations are involved.

If I had unlimited resources, what would I spend my time doing?

This removes the practical constraints and lets you explore what truly matters to you.

When do I feel happiest or most like myself?

Pay attention to those moments when you're not performing for anyone, when you feel completely authentic.

These questions might require some serious reflection. If the answers don't come easily, that's completely okay. It might mean you need to start even more foundational--by identifying or reconnecting with your core values.

Building On Strong Foundations

Your core values are the bedrock of who you are. They inform every major decision you make, from family dynamics to career choices, from the hobbies you pursue to the places you travel. They shape your character and guide your path forward.

Understanding your values isn't just a nice self-help exercise. It's essential work that determines whether you're building a life that actually fits who you are, or just constructing something that looks good from the outside while feeling hollow within.

Think of it this way: you wouldn't build a house on unstable ground. The same principle applies to your life. Without a clear understanding of your foundation--your values, your authentic desires, your true self--everything you build on top will eventually crack.

Moving Forward With Clarity

As we move through 2026, I encourage you to make self-discovery a priority. Take the time to explore who you are beneath all the expectations, assumptions, and performances. Ask yourself the hard questions. Identify what truly matters to you.

Because here's what I've learned: you can't create your own reality if you don't know who's doing the creating.
