Focus On What You Have: The Power of Gratitude in Building Your Future

|Sky Knox

Listen here.

It's so easy to forget about all the amazing things you have right now, especially when you may not be where you ideally want to be.

I want you to flip that thought.

Be grateful for everything you have right now. In this moment. Take a second to identify something you are grateful for and say it out loud.

Why Gratitude Matters More Than You Think

Here's the truth: even if you're not exactly where you want to be, you still have things now that you didn't have before. It's all part of the process.

If you're not grateful for the things you have now, do you think you're going to be any more grateful when you achieve more or have more things? No. You're just going to be in a constant cycle of wanting more.

Now I know it's hard sometimes to find things that you're grateful for, especially on the bad days, but I want you to remember that there are other people in the world who don't have HALF or even a QUARTER of the things you have.

Good Things Take Time

Good things take time. Amazing things take even more time than that. You need to put in the time and the hard work to get yourself to that point. If you give up along the way because you're not seeing immediate results, how do you expect to reach your goals?

I know I've been mentioning this a lot lately, but that's only because it is so incredibly true!

You have to take a chance on yourself and just do it! Focus on the things you have right now and figure out what you can make happen. I'm sure there are way more things you can do right now than what you may be thinking.

Don't keep blocking your blessings of the life you could be living because you didn't think you had everything you needed. The longer you wait, the longer you're going to be stuck where you are.

A Practical Exercise: Connect The Dots

Here's what I want you to do:

Do a brainstorm session. Write down all the ideas you have and all of the things you want to do, whether it be in your career, in your personal life, as a hobby, or with your friends.

Now instead of thinking of ALL the reasons why you may not be able to do those things right now, I want you to think of what you CAN do right now.

What are the steps you can take to get yourself closer to those ideas? What actions can you take right now that will help you realize that it is possible for you?

Write all of those things out in a column or space next to your brainstorm session. And I know this sounds silly, but I want you to Connect The Dots.

So many of the things we want to do in life correlate with each other. Sometimes those correlations are a bit more obvious than others, but they are there. Figure out which thread or action you can start with that will be able to create that chain reaction.

Stop Waiting For Perfect

Don't stop to think about what you may be missing or what may not be perfect. Think about the destination that you just mapped out for yourself. Use that as your fuel every day.

And remember, you got yourself to where you are now. Even if it's not your picture-perfect situation, I'm sure it's something you dreamed about long ago. If that's not the case, that's okay too! Because now you have the power to move yourself forward.

Stop looking at your present as not good enough or stop thinking that you're not prepared.

God has brought you to this very moment and knows that you are more than capable to see things through.

I know it may not be easy, especially at first, but nothing worth having is.

Your Starting Point

While you're building toward your future, remember: focus on what you have, because that's where you will start.

You have everything you need right now to take the first step. The question isn't whether you're ready. The question is whether you're willing to begin.
