Fear Has A Name ( And It's Not What You Think)
You've probably heard this before, but it's worth repeating: FEAR is False Evidence Appearing Real. That's it! That's all it is.
Whatever you're afraid of — not being successful, being judged, being too much or not enough — I want you to ask yourself: do you have any actual evidence that those things are going to happen? Or is your brain just doing what brains do, and spinning out worst-case scenarios that feel very real but aren't?
Everybody's fear list looks a little different, mine has always included the camera.
When video became part of podcasting, I was... not exactly thrilled. One of the reasons I fell in love with the podcast space in the first place was because I didn't have to film myself. No worrying about lighting, backgrounds, looking put-together — just my voice and my message.
But here I am. Showing up anyway, imperfect setup and all. Because I know that done is better than perfect, and waiting for perfect is just fear in a fancy outfit.
The Waiting Game Is a Trap
We tell ourselves we're just being strategic. "I'll start when I have the right equipment." "I'll post when my content is better." "I'll launch when the market settles down."
But from experience? Life doesn't pause to give you the perfect on-ramp. In fact, it often pushes you into things before you feel ready.
A little over a year ago, I got let go from my full-time job — a position I'd held for nearly two years, just gone. It was hard. That was my entire income. But in that space, I made a choice to pour myself into the things that actually mattered to me, the work that could move me forward in the direction I actually wanted to go.
And then recently, it happened again. Let go from my part-time job, no notice, no explanation — just silence. Which, if you've ever been on the receiving end of that kind of silence, you know exactly how it feels.
But here's where I keep landing: there is more for me. I know it because I know I'm capable of more. And I know the same is true for you.
Your People Are Already Waiting
One of the biggest reasons people stay stuck — especially right now — is the fear that the market is too saturated. That there are already too many people doing the thing they want to do.
And I get it. The algorithm doesn't help. The more you research something, the more content you see about it, and suddenly it feels like everyone has already arrived at the destination you're still trying to find the trailhead for.
But here's the truth: your people aren't looking for the most established person in the space. They're looking for you. Your angle, your story, your way of explaining things. The clients, the customers, the community — they exist. You just haven't introduced yourself yet.
Good things take time! You're not going to snap your fingers and see results overnight. But every single person who is out there living their dream right now started exactly where you are: at the beginning, afraid, before it made sense.
The First Step Changes Everything
I'm not going to tell you it gets easy right away — because it doesn't. Fear doesn't just disappear. But I will tell you this: once you take the first step, something shifts. The thing that felt impossible starts to feel possible. The mountain starts to look more like a hill.
So here's your homework. After you finish reading this — really think about it:
What is the one step you can take today to move toward your goal?
Not next week. Not when you feel ready. Today.
