Listen here.
It's completely fine to be different.
You have one life, live it with zero regrets.
I know — it's not a new message. It's not unfamiliar from anything else I've shared before, because it all comes back to the same thing: creating your own reality and building a life you actually love.
Here's the truth though — life is short, and so many of us take it way too seriously. I get it, I've been there myself, plenty of times. I'm not saying things don't deserve to be taken seriously when they need to be — as a chronic overthinker and a somewhat recovering perfectionist, trust me, I take things seriously a lot. It's a work in progress. None of us are perfect, and that's okay.
But when it comes to being different — being able to forge your own path, to do the things that genuinely make you happy and fill your cup — that's what deserves your focus. Not what everyone else says. Not what everyone else thinks. Even if, like a lot of us, you grew up in an environment that taught you otherwise.
The Comparison Trap
Social media doesn't make this any easier. It's hard not to compare yourself to people who seem like they're already "there" — friends, family, even strangers who somehow landed the opportunity you've been chasing.
But here's what I keep coming back to: who's to say you're doing any better or worse than they are?
Maybe they did get the opportunity. But who's to say they're actually enjoying it? Social media is a highlight reel. If all you're seeing is the highlight reel, you have no idea what's actually going on for someone day to day.
Doing your own thing — really creating your own path around what you love — matters so much more than keeping score against someone else's edited version of success.
My Own Non-Traditional Path
I'll use myself as an example. I'm currently finishing my Pilates teacher certification — something that's been on my goals list for the past three years. Knowing I'll finally check that off next month? I genuinely can't put into words how exciting that is!
And honestly, this fits a pattern. I've never followed a traditional path. I started in school for dance, switched my major to cinematography, and now I'm moving into being a Pilates instructor. Creativity over convention, every time.
"You Should Just Get a Safe Job"
Recently, I was talking to someone about how challenging life can be sometimes — especially living in LA, where everything (don't even get me started on gas prices) costs a fortune. Somewhere in that conversation, this person told me, "You should focus on getting a safe job. Like a nine-to-five."
I had to physically hold back my laughter.
If you've listened a few episodes back, you already know I've been laid off from two different jobs in the past two years. The first was mutual. The second — I don't have a definitive answer, but it seemed like it came down to my availability, because I was pursuing something I'm passionate about and needed a second income to support it.
Hearing "get a safe job" after that lit up something in me. If you've seen Inside Out, you know Anger — that's exactly what I felt, like a cartoon flame coming off my body. I kept my composure in the moment, but reflecting on it afterward reminded me how much I want to build a business, build a brand, and build my version of a dream life.
Your Differences Are Your Superpower
Here's the thing — that dream life isn't going to look the same for everyone, and that's the most powerful part of all.
You need to channel the things that make you different from everybody else. It's not always easy to see those things as strengths at first. But the more you connect with other people and have honest conversations, the more you'll start to realize just how valuable those differences really are.
Whether you're building a business, growing in your career, learning a trade, or going the freelance route — no two people are exactly alike. That's your superpower.
Be different. Acknowledge it. Use it as a strength in your everyday life.
It might feel hard to make that switch at first. But it will be so incredibly powerful to see where it can actually take you!
